Professor Pratima Sinha
Date of Birth: November 14,1952

Education: Ph.D. from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

Fields of Specialization:Molecular Genetics of Yeast and Molecular Biology She worked on molecular biology of yeast with an attempt to clone the gene coding for the glycolytic enzyme, pyruvate kinase. Worked towards characterization of clone carrying the PYK1 gene of yeast at the Department of Genetics, University of Washington, Seattle. Later at Cornell University, she worked on mutants of yeast. Since 1987, she has been teaching at the Bose Institute, Kolkata and is now the Chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry.
Recipient of the National Science Talent Scholarship by NCERT from 1969 to 1978. Member of Guha Research Conference and Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (Allahabad) and of the Indian Academy of Sciences (Bangalore). She has innumerable publications to her credit. She is on the editorial board of the renowned science journal, Current Science.
Awarded Stree Shakti Science Samman (Year 2001)for her outstanding contribution in the field of molecular biology and biochemistry; in particular for her researches on the process of chromosome transmission during eukaryotic cell division. She is also an active leader in teaching, promotion and management of science.
