Indira Nath was born in Andhra Pradesh in India 14 Jan 1938. Schooling in La Mariniere, Calcutta, Medical Education - MBBS (gold medallist as best graduate ) and MD in Pathology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi . Fellow of Royal College of Pathologists, London, Fellow of four Science and Medical academies.
Research contribution is in the area of Immunology of infectious diseases. She is an internationally renowned authority on leprosy, numerous people who may contract the leprosy bacillus, not all of them develop the same form of the disease. She has identified a mechanism: a deficiency in the immune response system, associated with the triggering of the pathology of its most serious form, lepromatous leprosy. This discovery constitutes a significant advance towards the development of treatments and vaccines.
Recipient of prestigious national and international awards for research in immunology of leprosy. The last ones were UNESCO L'Oreal Award for Women in Science for her work in developing medication and vaccines for leprosy treatment. in Asia Pacific region, DSc from Pierre and Marie Curie University of Paris, Padma Shri from President of India, Chevalier National Order of Merite from President of France, Honoured on Tuscanny Day in Florence. She has been member of Scientific Advisory Committees . Founder Chairman and Senior Professor of Department of Biotechnology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine, Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology, Malaysia. She is actively involved at Government level for Career Prospects of Women Scientists. She has been Foreign Secretary of Indian Science Academy and Vice President and Council Member of Indian Academy of Science.
