Dr. Chitra Mandal
Education: PhD, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1978.
Now Scientist "F" in Structural Biology & Bio-Informatics Division of Indian Institute of Chemical Biology.

Fields of Specialization/(Current Research Interest:) Demonstration of modified sialoglyconjugates both on host and parasites, development of antigen based diagnostic tool and their biological role in Visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Establishment of disease-specific glycosylated molecular variants of human C-reactive proteins for its clinical application as a disease-specific biomarker. Investigation of O-acetylated sialoglycotopes in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and the role of the disease-specific antigen and antibodies in understanding the disease-biology. Role of glycosylation mainly differential sialylation in adhesion process and cell signaling of hematopiotic stem cell for their potential application in childhood ALL. Proteomics of these purified clinically important molecules.
Awarded The ICMR Kshanika Oration Award 2002( instituted in 1977 by Dr.K.N.Sen, former Professor of Medicine, School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta ) given to eminent women scientists for outstanding contributions in Biomedical Sciences. Dr Mandal received the award for her work on ?Glycosylation of biomolecules in medicine and their application in medical research?. Dr.Chitra Mandal has been actively engaged in understanding the role of Glycosylation of biomolecules in medicine and their potential applications in medical research for the last 20 years such as Sialylation of cell surface of lymphoblasts and their modulation in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in children, exploration of human C-reactive proteins for their potential clinical use, glycosylation of host and parasite specific biomolecules in Indian leishmaniasis.
Received Smt. Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel Vasvik Award in 2000 for development of ELISA based diagnostic technology for detection of Alpha-feto protein. and P. B. Rama Rao Memorial Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions in biological chemistry and allied sciences. She has 75 publications in international and national journals and 6 patents at her credit. She has been elected Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
